Communicating conflict and ambiguity in requirements engineering

Lancaster UniversityEffective requirements engineering in the presence of imperfection remains a major research problem. There is a lack of metaphors to aid communication about such imperfections during consultation with stakeholders. The aim of this thesis research is to improve the identification, communication, and handling of ambiguity and conflict in non-functional requirements, inadvertently introduced during the RE process. The thesis proposes a new approach based in the jigsaw puzzle metaphor, which is a novel contribution in the area of visual metaphors, and as a communication mechanism to make conflict and ambiguity explicit during stakeholder consultation meetings. This metaphor is based on jigsaw puzzles, where each puzzle piece represents a requirement. When the requirement text contains ambiguities and/or conflicts with other requirements, the respective puzzle pieces almost fit together but not perfectly. The approach presents heuristics to identify the most pertinent conflicts and ambiguities to handle and thus to make explicit through the badly-fitting matches. The gamming nature of the jigsaw puzzle metaphor, the fact it presents an easy to understand and learn language, as well as the analogy with misshapen graphical visualization (the badly-fitting matches) to represent that there is a problem, and its adequacy to a creative task as RE is; altogether are key characteristics that contribute to the adequacy and success of the jigsaw puzzle metaphor when used in stakeholder consultation meetings. In fact the jigsaw puzzle metaphor used together with the proposed method for conducting the consultation meetings with the stakeholders proved successful in: Increasing effectiveness when compared with text presentation. Fostering team work and communication, and improving commitment of stakeholders in co-authoring of requirements and co-responsibility in ambiguity and conflict handling. Promoting a relaxed environment to improve team cooperation and creativity. A key contribution of this thesis is its focus on separating the processing of the information about the imperfection from the issue of communicating that imperfection. Such a separation, though critical, has not been proposed to date

Release profile of ibuprofen in β-cyclodextrin complexes from two different solid dosage forms

    Get PDF
The objective of this work was to develop solid dosage forms using powders containing inclusion complexes (ibuprofen with β-cyclodextrin) which were used to produce tablets (direct compression without additional excipients) and pellets (extrusion/spheronization) from wet mass containing 40% (w/w) of microcrystalline cellulose. The pellets also demonstrated that during preparation of the wet mass, the inclusion process occurred in a same yield that when pre-complexation was used. The particles characteristics were evaluated after being obtained through different complexation methods. The results showed that the tensile strength and profile dissolution were as expected for both dosage forms. Tablets containing inclusion complexes showed higher solubility when compared with a reference formulation and with two commercial formulations. The ibuprofen released from the two pellets formulations didn’t show relevant differences between them. The drug released was analyzed considering different dissolution parameters. The advantages of these new methodologies can be summarized as: (a) tablets were produced at a lower cost for the total process; and (b) in the pellet´s preparation there was no need of the previous complexation method resulting in a decrease in time and energy required

Introduction: Giant condyloma acuminatum belongs to a spectrum of diseases with malignant degeneration. Clinically, it presents as exophytic, fungating masses, sometimes with a cauliflower-like morphology. Case presentation: We present a case of a 32-year-old female patient with a 180x95x80mm exophytic mass of the vulvar region suggestive of Buschke-Lowenstein Tumour. Treatment included wide local excision with electrosurgery and CO2 vaporization of recurrent focal lesions. Histopathological analysis confirmed the expected diagnosis. Surgery went without complications and the patient is lesion-free at the 12th month of follow-up. Conclusion: There is a lack of consistent trials regarding optimal treatment of BLT. Surgery, when feasible, remains the mainstay of treatment. It allows quick lesion size reduction, with fewer side effects and more rapid return to daily living activities, when compared to other treatment options

Sensing as a Service Model for Smart Cities Supported by Internet of Things

The world population is growing at a rapid pace. Towns and cities are accommodating half of the world's population thereby creating tremendous pressure on every aspect of urban living. Cities are known to have large concentration of resources and facilities. Such environments attract people from rural areas. However, unprecedented attraction has now become an overwhelming issue for city governance and politics. The enormous pressure towards efficient city management has triggered various Smart City initiatives by both government and private sector businesses to invest in ICT to find sustainable solutions to the growing issues. The Internet of Things (IoT) has also gained significant attention over the past decade. IoT envisions to connect billions of sensors to the Internet and expects to use them for efficient and effective resource management in Smart Cities. Today infrastructure, platforms, and software applications are offered as services using cloud technologies. In this paper, we explore the concept of sensing as a service and how it fits with the Internet of Things. Our objective is to investigate the concept of sensing as a service model in technological, economical, and social perspectives and identify the major open challenges and issues.Comment: Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies 2014 (Accepted for Publication

Data: the Good, the Bad and the Ethical

It is often the case with new technologies that it is very hard to predict their long-term impacts and as a result, although new technology may be beneficial in the short term, it can still cause problems in the longer term. This is what happened with oil by-products in different areas: the use of plastic as a disposable material did not take into account the hundreds of years necessary for its decomposition and its related long-term environmental damage. Data is said to be the new oil. The message to be conveyed is associated with its intrinsic value. But as in the case of real oil, we should take care to ensure that its use does not create harm in the future. We know from recent history that data can be used in harmful ways, but data also has enormous positive potential when applied to the service of communities. In this article, we highlight the opportunities, problems and best practice of using data
